The music of the 1960s will fill Knox United Church (345 Pym St.) in Parksville on Feb. 11.

Piano and organ duo Ron Klusmeier and Jenny Vincent will perform a fundraising concert, for the Craig Bay Choristers, featuring some of their favourite folk and love songs of the era, plus a musical tribute to the love affair of 19th Century composer Robert Schumann and his wife Clara.

“They’re going to go back to the 60s and perform some love songs and have some banter back and forth,” said Jim Reid, organizer and president of the Craig Bay Choristers. “Ron on the piano and Jenny on the organ.”

The concert’s first section will treat listeners to a selection of 60s love songs, according to Klusmeier, who will also do some storytelling.

The second section, performed by Vincent solo on the organ, will celebrate the love affair of Robert and Clara.

The third section will be devoted to folk songs by popular groups of the era, such as Peter, Paul and Mary. Klusmeier said he is partial to the classic ‘Puff the Magic Dragon’.

“People just immediately get into it and everybody seems to love that song,” he said.

The music and storytelling will be accompanied by visuals, including song titles, credits, lyrics and historical images, by Christina Bogucki.

Klusmeier added it will be fun to play with Vincent again, both are former music directors at Knox United Church.

“She is just a stunning musician. I really can’t say enough about the magic she does on the organ,” said Klusmeier.

The Craig Bay Choristers choir was started in 2002 to give people an outlet for singing, along with its physical and mental health benefits, according to Reid.

The concert begins at 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 11 and will be approximately 75 minutes long.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at Fireside Books, at the door and by contacting craigbaytickets@gmail.com.
