It was a highly successful weekend for dancers competing with a Coombs studio.
Cassandra Karras’s School of Highland Dance took home five awards at the 160th Victoria Highland Games on May 20 and May 21.
“They worked really hard and it shows,” said Karras. “I don’t think we’ve come back with five awards in one competition before so that’s pretty awesome.”
Each dancer performed four times and was evaluated based on an aggregate, Karras said.
Cassie Coates won the beginner category (12 and over) on the first day, Aila Suzuki took home first in the intermediate category (13 and under), Marley Babiy also won the beginner category (12 and over) on the second day, Heather Karras won in premier (adult category) and Zaira Walsh had top marks in the premier category (16 and over).

Walsh also had an outstanding showing at the 2023 BC Closed Championships on May 27, where she was the fifth runner-up.
“She was competing against the top dancers in the world and Canada in her class. So it’s pretty awesome that she’s sharing the stage,” Karras said.
Karras has had her dance studio in Coombs for approximately 13 years.
