The first Parksville Untapped beer festival went over better than expected

Parksville’s first Untapped event brewed up a large crowd and plenty of accolades at Tigh-Na-Mara Resort last Thursday during Parksville’s Uncorked Wine and Food Festival.

Untapped kicked off the Uncorked festival Thursday evening and PR and Marketing co-ordinator Kelly Poppy was pleased with the turnout.

“It went even better than we had hoped,” she said, citing a crowd of about 200. “It went off without a hitch and we had great response from guests and from vendors.”

Breweries from all over the Island and the Lower Mainland served up a selection of beer and ciders, paired with local fare.

Nanaimo musician Melissa Hill entertained at the event while beer historian Greg Evens made a casual presentation.

Poppy confirmed the event will happen again next year.

A record number of people attended Swirl at the Beach Club Resort last weekend, with attendance reaching over 450 people.

“We’re seeing growth each year,” said director of sales and marketing at The Beach Club, Natasha Richardson, “the feedback and response each year has been great.”

Swirl is the signature event held during Parksville’s Uncorked festival, which had 23 wine vendors from B.C. each pouring a selection of fine wines for participants to taste throughout the lobby, restaurant and banquet room of the resort.

Eleven local food vendors like the Blue Burrito Grill, Little Qualicum Cheeseworks and the Rod and Gun Cafe served up tasty treats to accompany the wine while Vancouver jazz band Alita Dupray entertained.

Richardson said dates for next year’s events will be posted on the website shortly. www.parksvilleuncorked.com.
