Something for everyone

Qualicum Beach-Beach day approaching, an extremely low tide this year will only add to the fun

Beach Day returns to Qualicum Beach on Sunday, July 21, 2013 as a full day of family fun and music on the beach.

The array of activities from last year will return, with some new events and displays. From skim boarding and beach volleyball to sandcastle building and giant bubbles, there will be something for everyone.

“There’s something to appeal to everybody, all ages,” said Tom Russell, one of the organizers. “It’s a great no cost event, bring a lunch and hang out on the beach,” he said.

There is an all ages swimsuit show, live local entertainment, beach seining for sea creatures at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., live touchable displays by the Shellfish Research Centre and face painting will be available.

Electric shuttles running between the beach and parking areas downtown will provide an alternate parking option.

Low tide is at 10 a.m. this year, and it’s really low. The day will begin with the Shriners’ breakfast at 8 a.m. and beach activities starting in the mid-morning and continuing until the tide comes in early afternoon.

While the family activities start early the younger kids will likely tire out, Russell said, and they’ll focus on the older crowd for an afternoon salmon barbecue hosted by the Kiwanis Club.
