The Old School House (TOSH) Arts Centre in Qualicum Beach has begun a capital fundraising campaign.

“Next year is TOSH’s 35th year anniversary,” said Illana Hester, executive director. “And we’re launching off a capital campaign this year because we’ve been so impacted by COVID.”

Through its ‘Arts for All’ campaign, TOSH is hoping to raise $250,000, over the next three years, to maintain and update its heritage building that was constructed in 1912, bolster its music program, expand its education program and sustain regular operations.

The ‘Old School House Bash’ is set for Sept. 17 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the arts centre (122 Fern Rd W).

The 1950s-themed event will include live music, a silent auction of art from Island artists, a 50/50 draw and pizza from La Stella Trattoria.

Hester said TOSH has been fortunate to receive a number of program grants, but operating supplements and grants are harder to come by.

Funds will also go towards tables, chairs and new blinds for the classroom, in addition to technology needed for online learning.

Campaign funding will also be used to renovate the downstairs bathroom for accessibility, refurbish the floors on the ground level and upgrade accessibility infrastructure on the ground floor level.

TOSH is also hoping to boost its music program and host additional music events such as evening cabarets and festivals, ensuring all musicians get fair and equitable pay.

The funding will also go towards providing more options for classes and workshops and expand offerings for students with disabilities, while continuing to pay professional artists to instruct.

Hester added they are also looking into starting a photography mentorship program and plan to establish a fine art lending library, which will serve as a resource hub for the community.

Tax receipts will be given to anyone who donates $20 or more.

Tickets to the Old School House Bash on Sept. 17 are $150 and available on TOSH’s website. A tax receipt is available for a $50 portion of the ticket.
