Try out a tuba

Symphony’s Community Day on Saturday includes an opportunity to try some instruments

The Vancouver Island Symphony is hosting Symphony Community Day Saturday, Oct. 20 at the Port Theatre in Nanaimo, a chance to meet musicians, play instruments and watch an open rehearsal.

From 11 a.m. to noon it’s the Musical Instrument Zoo where youngsters can try out a variety of instruments like cello, flute, trumpet, tuba, bassoon, oboe, French horn, bass and percussion. From 11:45 to 12:15 p.m. it’s time to meet cellist and Noteworthy Kids artistic co-ordinator Joel Strobbe and talk about upcoming activities for kids. He will also introduce a surprise musician.

From 12:30 to 1:30 is the open rehearsal. Everyone is invited to take in a rehearsal directed by the popular Pierre Simard. Reserve for your free ticket for this event by calling 250-754-8550. Donations to the Noteworthy Kid Music Club are welcomed.
