Re: Annual herring run 2019
The caption below the March 12 front-page photograph of a fishing boat along the coast of Parksville Qualicum Beach piqued my interest.
In part, the caption noted, “In the waters, the sea lions were also on hand, hoping to steal some of the fisherman’s haul.”
It seems to me that the reverse is true. The fishing boats and their owners don’t have exclusive ownership of the herring, so the sea lions aren’t stealing anything.
In fact, the fishermen are the culprits stealing the rich food source that feeds the ocean’s creatures.
