Re: 'Town of Qualicum Beach wants railway crossing traffic controls reconfigured' (PQB News, Jan. 29)
The obsolete stop signs at the railway in Qualicum Beach are indeed hazardous. People regularly walk the long unused rail line. Unfortunately pedestrians, often with pets, who cross the roads along the railway may unwittingly be expecting motorists to heed the stop signs, but many motorists have grown accustomed to not stopping.
The solution is to abandon the railway. Turning the railway into a trail will also speed implementation of Qualicum Beach's Age Friendly Transportation Plan. Without the railway, a traffic signal can be added at Mill Street and Memorial Avenue.
