Re: ‘Qualicum school district considers eliminating field trips requiring air travel’ (PQB News, Sept. 25)
International air travel and learning about other cultures is an integral part of the education experience.
Air travel also serves a valuable social function, uniting families, and providing a lifeline to remote towns requiring critical fuels, food and medicine.
To recommend that students remain at home because of the carbon footprint attributed to air travel is ridiculous. Scientific fact is that the longer the direct journey by air, the smaller the actual carbon footprint. Perhaps our trustee will be content to spend the rest of his days exploring Vancouver Island on his bicycle.
