Re: ‘KSS students disappointed with Parksville council decision to not ban single-use plastic bags’ (PQB News, April 16)

Thanks to the students of Kwalikum Secondary School and PQB News reporter Karly Blats for putting some wings on it. There was a saying in the ’60s when I and others did our bit for the world and it goes, “never trust anyone over 30.”

The rationale was that by the time you were 30 you have too much self-interest, baggage and obligation to the system to fight for change. What everyone forgets is that today we are only leasing our stay on Planet Earth, it is not and never will be anyone’s to destroy.

It belongs to the future and only through change like CFC elimination will it survive. Remember the Montreal Accord and the search for alternates to save the ozone layer and humanity?

Plastic pollution is huge.

Get beyond the fear that it might inconvenience shoppers or marketers.

There is now an era of geological history relating to plastic in sedimentary stone. The world will not collapse if all plastic production was stopped tomorrow, but it might if we continue on this insane journey. Don’t wait for us old folk to save the planet, it has always been the next generation to step up and say enough already.

Hell, as the rest of the world changes away from fossil fuel we are still debating if we should build a bigger pipeline.

The world will thank you for whatever you can do, and so shall I.
