On Sept. 7, my wife and I were on a coach trip on the mainland when we suffered a breakdown.

We found ourselves marooned in Manning Provincial Park and, to our frustration, out of cellphone coverage.

The driver was magnificent and eventually arranged a replacement coach.

However all this took some time during which 40 of us were camped out by the side of the highway for six hours before we were eventually rescued around 8 p.m. and finally deposited at our destination of Penticton at 11:30 p.m.

Throughout this long wait by the road we were passed by countless vehicles but only two semis and a car stopped to enquire if we needed help.

The occupants of the car were a young Muslim couple from Agassiz who promptly raided their car to offer us fruit and granola bars. If this kindness was not enough, they then returned again an hour later having driven all the way into Hope and returned once more with cold drinks and a shopping bag of chips.

When we offered them recompense they asked only for our prayers. We were humbled.

Here was a young family practising the ‘Golden Rule’ and illustrating a refreshing positive side to the Islamic faith. A lesson for us all.
