Brant Festival to feature salmon tour

One of nature's wonders to be highlight

This Thursday a Brant Festival event will allow residents to explore the Big Qualicum Hatchery with the Qualicum Streamkeepers and Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

The tour will divulge strategies to increase salmon populations for both wild and hatchery fish.

The hatchery started in the 1960s and Streamkeepers’ president Pat Jacobson said it’s a good opportunity to learn about salmon and our local hatchery.

Beyond education of the different salmon species and surrounding ecosystem, participants will have the opportunity to feed the fish and trap some Chum fry who will be migrating down the river.

The tour will be followed by a picnic lunch.

The event happens this Thursday, April 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are $20 including lunch. To reserve a spot contact Robin Rivers at 1-866-288-7878 ext. 226 or rrivers@naturetrust.bc.ca.
