The popularity and charm of speed dating has found its way to the ski hill and just in time for Valentine’s Day, Mount Washington is offering singles a ride to romance.

Can you really meet the man or women of your dreams after just a few minutes of casual chit-chat? That’s the premise behind speed dating which has been a popular trend for singles with limited time to look for love.

The round robin event has been described as a cross between a job interview, a blind date and a game of musical chairs. Two people converse for several minutes before moving on to the next person.

It offers singles the chance to meet dozens of potential partners in a short period of time. At the end of the session you can ask a partner for a date, but a date only takes place if the other party is in agreement.

Leah Knutson Special Events Co-ordinator at Mount Washington says their Slopeside Singles event will take place Saturday, February 5 on the Eagle Chair.

She said the alpine adaptation of speed dating is ideal since a ride on the chairlift is only a few minutes and you already share a passion for snow sports with the person seated next to you.

“It’s a way to meet and talk to people who are into the outdoors and are active.”

In the ski area speed-date scenario, there is no ditching your date before your time is up but Knutson said they have some fun games for the ride up which will help those who dread the thought of striking up a conversation with a stranger.

“We have ice breakers and fun games to help start the conversation.”

After riding the chair and meeting new people, participants will rate their top three choices and Knutson said if they get a match they will win a prize.

She said there are lots of prizes and those who find love have a chance to win a stay at Middle Beach Lodge in Tofino, a Romeo and Juliet Package at The Old House Village Hotel and Spa, a Friday Night Snowshoe Fondue at Mount Washington, the ultimate Be My Valentine Gift Basket and other great prizes from the Romance Shop.

The amorous event at Mount Washington begins with registration at 11 a.m., highspeed chairlift dating from 1 to 4 p.m. and appies and cocktails from 4 to 6 p.m. afterwards.

Registration is $5 at the tent by the Eagle Chair and is for adults only.
