Students in B2B’s Junior Music & Performance (JUMP) education classes rehearse for their student showcase performance last week.

Students ages 6-12 were busy learning new performance skills last week, at the Junior Music and Performance (JUMP) education classes held every summer by Bard to Broadway Theatre Society (B2B).

The kids took part in choral singing, rhythm and improvisation, song and dance, musical theatre and acting. But they also learn other skills, said instructor Hilary Whelton.

“Mostly what they learn is how to get along in a group,” she said. “They have to learn how to mentor and support one another.”

Whelton said the kids always surprise her with how much they learn and how well they work together. And the kids always seem to shine during their showcase performance for friends and family at the end of the week.

“It’s a little annual miracle,” she said.

B2B’s Teen Musical Theatre (TMT) begins this week, with a public performance happening August 19 in the evening and a matinee performance Aug. 20 at the Qualicum Beach Community Hall. More details for this event coming up in The News.
