Parksville Coun. Mary Beil would like council to consider chipping in for two public art installation fees.
The city will host numerous events and activities from late September through mid-October as part of BC Culture Days.
“Parksville is the chosen lead city for BC Culture Days this year, which is quite an honour," Beil said during council's July 15 meeting. "There are numerous community events planned, all of which are free or by donation."
The events are for all ages and let people in the community contribute to various art projects.
“They bring people together to create lasting pieces and memorable experiences," Beil said.
She brought a notice of motion let council know of her intent to bring a motion to have council consider the cost of installation for a scrap metal sculpture and a graffiti art inspired mural.
“They will become permanent pieces to be put on display for the enjoyment of the public and the enhancement of the downtown area,” Beil said.
The cost for installation of the two pieces range quite a bit, between $15,000 and $25,000, because there are a number of unknown factors, including the sites, according to Beil.
She suggested council could consider matching donations up to a maximum of $7,500.
The lead artist for Parksville's Culture Days is currently applying for grants, Beil said. Council has already committed to sponsoring the event kickoff, she added.
Culture Days 2024 will take place between Sept. 20 and Oct. 13. Council's next regular meeting is Sept. 4.
