Parksville's first mobility mat was installed in July.

Access Oceanside Association has donated a beach mobility mat to the City of Parksville.

The "mobi-mat" provides easier beach access for people using wheelchairs, mobility scooters, families with strollers and others.

"It has always been Access Oceanside’s intention to transfer ownership of the 133 feet of mobi-mats to the City of Parksville so they can be integrated into your capital asset inventory," Sandra Hobson, chair of AOA, in a letter to council. "We would like to take this opportunity to once again thank you for all your support in this project. We look forward to a continued close collaboration in the future as we work to remove barriers to persons with disabilities in our community."

The mat was piloted at Parksville Bay Beach starting in late July with funding provided by Corona Canada and installation completed by city operations staff.

It allows users safely travel across soft sand and rocks to the hard-packed sand further down the beach.

Council voted unanimously at its Dec. 2 meeting to accept the donation.

The invoiced value of the mobi-mats $10,955, according to AOA.
