Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region receives $623K in federal funding

Government out $11.7 million for biosphere regions across Canada

The Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region Research Institute (MABRRI) is one of the beneficiaries of the more than $11.7 million funding the federal government has doled out for biosphere regions across Canada.

The funding announced on Aug. 22 by Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, will support projects led by the Canadian Biosphere Regions Association and the network of 19 biosphere regions across the country that are located in areas with high conservation value and potential.

The MABRRI, at Vancouver Island University, is dedicated to community engagement, relationship building and knowledge sharing will receive $623,740. The MABRRI focuses on research and community engagement initiatives primarily within the UNESCO-designated Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region. It also upholds VIU's Academic Research Plan by working on projects across Vancouver Island

Other recipients from Vancouver Island include the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust Society, $845,140, and Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative Society, $641,158.

The biosphere funding will also help communities thrive in harmony with nature. This is in addition to $11.3 million in funding the biosphere regions have received since 2021.
