The Nanoose Bay Fire Department plans to purchase a new duty truck.
With the hiring of a new full-time permanent deputy position last year, the department requires the truck for their new officer.
The department currently has one duty truck, shared by three primary duty officers.
The duty truck will allow experienced and senior personnel the ability to respond directly to an emergency scene and take command of the situation. The vehicle will be be utilized for out-of-area training, public education events and reduce the impact on the department's operation when maintenance is required on the existing duty truck.
Electoral Area Services Committee, at its meeting on March 6, endorsed staff recommendation asking the RDN board to approve the purchase of a duty truck and the appropriate outfitting with a budget of $100,000. The money will be come from the Electoral Area E (Nanoose Bay) Community Work Funds.
Area E director Bob Rogers supports the request.
"It is very valuable to the fire department to have two of the light duty and response trucks for the officers with respect to the seven days a week, 24 hours a day service that they provide and both in response to emergencies, whether it's motor vehicle emergencies or fire," said Rogers. "It's important for Nanoose to come up to standards with many of the other surrounding fire departments who have an additional duty officer vehicle.
If approved by the RDN board, the plan is to purchase the new truck this year.
