The City of Parksville is investing in bus stop improvements.

Parksville is putting some money towards transit stop improvements.

City council voted to add $10,000 in the financial plan for 2025, which could be used for infrastructure such as benches and bus shelters.

Director of finance Jedha Holmes estimated the funding would pay for two benches per year.

“In order to encourage people or allow for people to use transit more comfortably, it’s more than just having a bus stop, but also having some amenities there,” said Coun. Mary Beil.

Council will have a follow-up discussion to decide on locations, which will be informed by Regional District of Nanaimo transit data on ridership numbers, according to chief administrative office Keeva Kehler. The amount of space available at a stop will be another consideration, she added.

“Our staff would apply operational metrics to a number of different things and see, do we have the space available, do we have the ridership available," Kehler said.

Council voted unanimously to add the $10,000 to the budget for 2025. Funding will come from the city's off-street parking fund.
