Parksville council has approved a new assisted-living facility development for people living with brain injuries.
The development, at 365 Moilliet St., will include a two-storey building with 28 bedrooms for residents, as well as a "coach house" building for support staff offices and amenity spaces for the residents.
"This will provide a great service for people in our community and around Vancouver Island,” said Coun. Joel Grenz during council's Oct. 21 meeting. “The proponent selected Parksville on Vancouver Island which is something I think we can be proud of in the City of Parksville."
The residential building is also proposed to include a administration office, laundry and storage space. Resident amenities will include a library, recreation room, gym and bike room.
Mayor Doug O'Brien said he is pleased with the way the building layout has been designed.
“I think it’s going to be a very considerate and compassionate care unit and as we know in a great neighbourhood in Parksville,” he added.
The development will benefit Parksville because it facilitates recovery of people affected by significant brain injuries in a more holistic, home-centric model, according to the applicant. The site will be designed as barrier-free and fully accessible to people of varying abilities.
The application was made by Lintott Architects Inc., on behalf of the owners Ivanhoe Ventures Ltd. The facility will be run by Connect Communities.
A public open house was held in March in the Quality Foods event space across the street from the property. According to the applicant, two members of the public attended and two brief positive written comments were received.
