The Town of Qualicum Beach council approved an Earth Day tree planting event on April 22 with students from Kwalikum Secondary and Ballenas Secondary.

Brown Property Preservation Society volunteers are organizing the event with the students who will plant trees on municipal land adjacent to Grandon Creek with the town's Parks Department staff  from 9 a.m. to noon.

Coun. Anne Skipsey said a retired forester would lead the event. She added that last year there was a selection of trees that include cedar and fir that were planted.

Coun. Jean Young asked if a second location, one near the Into The Woods child care studio could be considered, for the tree planting event as well..

"I know in conversation with In The Woods, they really need to have some shade of trees to protect the students on sunny days when their mandate is to keep their students outside for a few hours each day," said Young. "And if that's a possibility to have trees there as well planted."

For now, council agreed to the Grandon Creek area and would look into considering other locations in the future.

"That might be a good one for the Friends of the Qualicum Beach Forest if they're looking to do a tree planting for national tree week or national forest week," said Skipsey, who also informed council there's a grant coming from the Parksville Qualicum Beach Community Foundation for the trees.
