The Qualicum School District and the Town of Qualicum Beach have announced a new collaborative effort to explore long-term solutions for the Qualicum Commons property.
The initiative builds on the strong relationship between the two parties and their shared interest in enhancing community services and social vibrancy, according to a joint news release by the town and the school district.
"Qualicum Commons, formerly the Qualicum Beach Elementary School, has long been a vital part of Qualicum Beach, serving as a hub for many activities and services," the release said. "Recognizing its significance, both the Qualicum School District and the Town of Qualicum Beach want to ensure that the property continues to benefit the community in meaningful ways."
The town and the district also recognize the importance of the existing tenants and the valuable community services currently offered at Qualicum Commons.
"Working with the Town of Qualicum Beach on the Qualicum Commons will allow the Qualicum School District to focus on our primary goal of high-quality education, while also helping to provide space that supports education, recreation, and a wide range of essential services," said Eve Flynn, board chairperson. "As the school district continues with its public notice period for this site, we encourage and welcome other proposals that may offer long-term solutions."
These services, which include educational programs, recreational activities, and support services, play a crucial role in the well-being of the community. The goal is to maintain and enhance these offerings while exploring long-term solutions to ensure that the site remains a vibrant and accessible community resource.
"This collaborative effort marks a significant step towards ensuring that Qualicum Commons continues to serve as a vibrant and essential community hub in the heart of our town," Mayor Teunis Westbroek said.
Details of the collaboration will be released as more information becomes available. Both parties are committed to transparency and will keep the community informed throughout the process.
