The Qualicum School District board approved he 2025-2026 Major Capital (Child Care) Plan Submission during its August meeting.

The Qualicum School District hopes to provide access to two new childcare centres with 75 spaces each at Bowser Elementary and Errington Elementary.

The Board of Education approved the 2025-2026 Major Capital (Child Care) Plan Submission during a recent meeting.

The submission will go to the Ministry of Education for an approval in principle, according to Ron Amos, secretary-treasurer for the school district. The school district will receive a reply in March, he added.

“All we’re asking for from the ministry right now is proof of concept kind of thing, recognizing that these are all in plans for now," Amos said during the Aug. 27 meeting.

The spaces are intended for infants, toddlers, pre-school, daycare and school age, according to the submission made to the ministry, included in the meeting agenda package.

Each centre has an estimated project cost of $4.5 million, for a total of $9 million.

The school district also applied for projects at Qualicum Beach Elementary and Winchelsea Learning Centre for the 2024-25 major capital year.
