The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) plans to honour First Nations and residential school survivors during National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Sept. 30.

The RDN will fly flags at half-mast at the administration building, recreation facilities and Nanoose Bay Volunteer Fire Department and place orange T-shirt decals on all RDN fleet vehicles including transit buses and fire trucks.

The RDN is encouraging everyone to wear orange to honour residential school survivors, to take part in in-person or virtual events, and to learn about the history of residential schools and the mandate of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation at nctr.ca

The Government of Canada in 2021, designated Sept. 30 of each year as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to ensure that public commemoration of the legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of reconciliation. This is a historic day for reflection, listening and learning.

In alignment with the provincial and federal governments, RDN services and office closures on Monday, Sept. 30 are as follows: RDN offices, Regional Landfill, Church Road Transfer Station, Ravensong Aquatic Centre, Oceanside Place Arena (office closed; arena open for pre-scheduled rentals - must book in advance by contacting 250-248-3252) and RDN Transit (office closed) Regular Sunday Level Service.
