Construction of the Rupert Road Watermain Extension Project is now complete.

The Rupert Road Watermain Extension project is now complete, delivering a significant improvement to the resiliency and reliability of the water supply for the Chartwell, Eaglecrest, and Sandpiper subdivisions.

Construction was completed by IWC Excavation with a total budget of $1,424,676 (excluding GST) and is expected to come in on budget, according to a press release. The project was funded in part through a $720,000 contribution from the RDN’s Electoral Area G Community Works Fund, provided in 2021 as part of the agreement allowing the RDN’s French Creek Water Service Area (Sandpiper) to access the town’s water system.

The release stated since the incorporation of the Chartwell subdivision in 2004, the area relied on a single watermain, leaving it vulnerable in the event of a break. The new secondary watermain, installed along Rupert Road between Qualicum Road and Ravensbourne Lane, strengthens the water supply infrastructure, ensuring a more reliable service for households and improving fire protection capabilities.

In addition to providing a secondary water connection, the project enables the essential addition of fire hydrants, reducing wildfire risks in the area. It also supports the clean water supply to the Sandpiper subdivision within the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN). Communication conduits were installed during excavation, creating future opportunities for fibre optic cable expansion to support municipal needs.
