The Parksville Civic and Technology Centre closed for the afternoon after smoke from roofing renovations set off the fire alarm on Oct. 21.
Parksville Fire Rescue was dispatched to the PCTC, located at 100 Jensen Ave. E, at 11:22 a.m., according to Fire Chief Marc Norris.
Fire crews arrived to alarms ringing and a "significant" amount of smoke in the atrium area, city finance and planning/building areas, as well as the school district offices on the second floor, Norris said.
"Fire Rescue crews determined the smoke was caused due to roofing operations," Norris said in an email to the PQB News. "Smoke was drawn into the building via an HVAC unit. Ventilation operations were initiated along with inspection of the roof area."
It was determined the building should stay closed for the rest of the day due to the smoke and the smoke odour.
Parksville Fire Rescue responded with one duty officer, one engine, one ladder truck and one rescue truck with a total of 13 fire rescue personnel on scene.
The building was turned over to facilities personnel at approximately 1:50 p.m. to continue with ventilation and smoke remediation.
Parksville City Council met online via Zoom rather than in person for its regular meeting at 1 p.m.
City Hall remains closed on Oct. 22 due to smoke.
