The Society of Organized Services is moving out of Qualicum Beach this month.
The organization announced, in a social media post, that it will be centralizing its child, youth and family programs at its Parksville location, and ending its tenancy at Qualicum Commons.
"The uncertain future of the Qualicum facility has contributed to this difficult decision," the SOS said in the post. "We want to assure families that all programs previously offered at Qualicum Commons will be available at our Parksville location, ensuring continued access to these vital services."
The Parksville location will serve as a central hub for the SOS's services.
The future of the Qualicum Commons building has been uncertain since last spring, when the Qualicum School District announced it intended to close both the Craig Street and Qualicum Commons facilities due to the approximately $4 million to $5 million in capital costs that need to be addressed between the two.
The Craig Street Commons in Parksville will close Jan. 1, 2026, while the school district and the Town of Qualicum Beach continue to work on a solution for the Qualicum Commons, although no formal agreement has been announced. The school district's board of education is set to vote on a motion to close the building, effective July 1, when it holds a meeting on March 11.
SOS said it will make a "strategic shift" to focus its limited resources on key initiatives and will "transition away" from its Seniors Connecting Program.
"We remain deeply committed to supporting seniors through our other essential programs," SOS said. "Including Oceanside Better at Home, Seniors Advocacy Services, Meals On Wheels and Medical Appointment Transportation Service."
The organization added it is grateful to its dedicated volunteers and generous donors.
"Your support is the heart and soul of everything we do," the post said. "Community contributions through financial gifts, thrift shop donations and volunteered time, fuel our ability to adapt, innovate, and continue serving the residents of District 69 by strengthening our social safety net."
The final day of programming in Qualicum Beach will be March 14.
Families already registered for upcoming programs in Qualicum Beach do not need to register again in Parksville, they will be contacted directly, according to SOS.
The SOS Community Services Centre is located at 245 Hirst Ave W in Parksville and the SOS Thrift Shop is located at 188 Hirst Ave W.
