Construction of the new skatepark in Qualicum Beach is slated to start in February.

Newline Skatepark Developments, a Vancouver-based company known for building skateparks in Canada, was awarded the contract for the $1.3-million project last December.

Qualicum Beach Skaters, the driving force behind the construction of a new skatepark and also raising funds to build it, are excited to see the project move forward. They are continuing to find ways to help advance the development.

The town and the developer are using various local construction companies and also tapping local sources for other aspects.

The Newline crew, nexperts in their field, will focus on specific specialized work on the project. QBS is helping Newline find accommodations for approximately 10 to 15 people from February to late May. They will require a place that has a kitchen, laundry and other amenities.

"My role in this is to collect responses and offers of accommodations to send to the town planner, Luke Sales, who is managing the project," said Lyndsay Reed of the QBS. "He then forward them on to Newline Skateparks for review. They will choose appropriate accommodations that work for them and negotiate pricing with the accommodations manager. I’m hoping to collect offers as soon as possible."

Reed added those who provide accommodations at a discounted rate will be mentioned in the grand opening and on social media.

"The savings we gain from discounted accommodations can potentially be put forward advanced park features, park artwork and a covered recreation area," said Reed.

If anyone has an accommodation or place they can rent out for a short term, email at QBskaters@gmail.com

The existing skatepark located near the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre was constructed 25 years ago and has reached the end of its user-life. It has been deemed unsafe and outdated.
