The Ballenas Whalers junior girls volleyball team will set their sights on the North Island finals in Campbell River this weekend.

The Whalers are peaking at the right time, as they finished first at the District Junior Girls Volleyball Championships hosted by John Barsby (Oct. 20-21). They faced the NDSS Mariners in the final and won 25-22 and 25-20 in a closely contested game.

The top six in the tournament advanced to the North Islands.

The other schools are Dover Bay, Ladysmith, Wellington and the Kwalikum Kondors who finished sixth in the tournament.

The Whalers, coached by Steve Dorsay, consist of Cardin McLaughlin, Cadie DenHaan, Jaycie Wickman, Sophia Torgerson, Isla Brett, Paige Reid, Alyssa Lane, Katelyn Spetch, Shayla Pick, Milea Howell, Andrea Williams and Taylor Farquhar.

This year, the Whalers host the Island Championships that will take place Nov. 6 and Nov. 7. The venues of the event are still being determined.
