The Oceanside Generals will build their own dressing room at Howie Meeker Arena at Oceanside Place.

The Oceanside Generals Hockey Society received news the Regional District of Nanaimo will provide $250,000 to the project, with funds to be drawn from the Oceanside Place Reserve Fund. The decision was made unanimously by the RDN board at its regular meeting on Nov. 14.

A funding and lease agreement between the RDN and the society will be put in place prior to providing the funds.

The Generals are currently playing in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) which earlier this year was given Junior A Tier 2 status by BC Hockey, along with the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) and the Pacific Junior Hockey League (PJHL).

The new status of the VIJHL has requirements for the Generals, including building their own separate dressing room at Oceanside Place. The Generals are raising funds for the project, estimated to cost more than $300,000.

The dressing room would include storage space, shower units, bathrooms, weight training area, a place for trainers and physiotherapists, and also a meeting room.

The project is expected to get underway some time next year.
