For seniors living in the Parksville-Qualicum Beach area, rapid advancements in technology can feel daunting. Recognizing the growing need for digital literacy, the Technology Learning Centre (TLC) offers free, personalized technology tutoring services to help seniors confidently navigate their devices. Since its launch in 2012, this community-driven program has made a significant impact by addressing individual technology needs and bridging the digital divide for the local senior population.
The program’s focus is simple but essential: offering personalized tutoring sessions where seniors can ask tech-related questions in a comfortable, judgment-free environment. “There was a constant need from seniors for a place where they could learn about technology in a safe, supportive space and not be afraid to ask even the most basic questions,” says TLC coordinator Brian Collicott.
Personalized tutoring that makes a difference
TLC’s tutoring sessions are fully customized to address each senior’s unique technological challenges. Whether it’s setting up a new device, using word processing software, or improving online security, the program provides tailored solutions. “If someone is new to our services, we use the first session to understand their questions, and then we either address them on the spot or arrange follow-up sessions,” Collicott explains.
Tutoring sessions are offered at convenient locations, including The Family Place in Parksville from 9 to 11:45 a.m., and the Qualicum Beach Seniors Activity Centre from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. TLC also reaches surrounding communities like Nanoose Bay, Coombs, and Qualicum Bay, ensuring that seniors can access help close to home and on a schedule that works for them.
A lasting community impact
In an area with a high senior population, TLC’s tech tutoring services have had a significant impact. One memorable success story involved a 92-year-old man who wanted to rewire his 1958 tractor. After seeking help with his laptop at TLC, he was guided to a YouTube tutorial that provided the information he needed. “He was able to find a tutorial video on rewiring a fairly rare tractor,” Collicott recalls.
With more than a decade of consistent funding, TLC has proven its value to the community, ensuring that seniors continue to have access to vital tech support. As the program expands, it remains committed to helping seniors develop the skills and confidence they need to stay connected, informed, and empowered in today’s digital age.
