Avoid summer heat struggles. The team at Pacific Rim Heat Pumps recommends early cooling mode, steady temps and monthly filter checks for top efficiency.

As temperatures climb, heat pumps become an essential part of staying cool at home. But for many homeowners – especially those unfamiliar with the nuances of heat pump systems – summer can bring unexpected challenges. Fortunately, with a little planning and know-how, you can avoid frustration and keep your home comfortable all season long.

One of the most common issues local HVAC professionals encounter this time of year is confusion around how to switch systems from heating mode to cooling mode. Depending on the system people have, it can be confusing," says Brady Currie, sales consultant with Pacific Rim Heat Pumps. “Many of the units don’t clearly display the mode – just a snowflake or sun icon, which can be ambiguous.”

Another common pitfall? Waiting too long to turn the system on. Many people don’t activate their cooling system until their home is already uncomfortably hot – think 26°C or higher. But once your home reaches that temperature, it can take up to 24 hours for a heat pump to bring it back down to a comfortable level.

“Cooling a house is much harder than heating it,” Currie explains. “If you let the heat build up, your system has to work overtime to play catch-up. The trick is to get ahead of the heat.”

That’s why they recommend switching to cooling mode as early as late April or May. Set the thermostat to 24°C and leave it there – even on cooler days. “You can always adjust it slightly,” Currie adds, “but keeping it consistent is key.”

Contrary to what many believe, heat pumps are most efficient when they run continuously at a low level. This steady performance reduces wear and tear.

Maintenance is another crucial factor. Homeowners should clean or replace filters monthly and schedule professional servicing at least once a year – ideally twice, in spring and fall. “You don’t want to discover a problem when it’s already hot out,” Currie says. “Even a short wait for repairs means your home stays hotter for longer.”

Proper sizing, good insulation and airflow management also play a role in performance. “Every house is different,” Currie explains. “We consider everything from sun exposure to window placement when sizing a system.”

Bottom line? A little proactive care goes a long way in keeping your home cool, your energy use efficient and your summer stress-free.
