Friendships take many forms. Some develop over time, while others come as a surprise. Meaningful connections enrich lives and enhance overall well-being. Engaging with others not only lifts spirits but also benefits health.

Residents of Berwick Parksville have found that living in a supportive community fosters a strong sense of belonging and provides opportunities to build lasting connections.

Doris & Joan – From misfortune to friendship

On her first day as a resident, Joan joined Doris for coffee and breakfast in the bistro and they have been friends ever since. Recovering from a ziplining accident, Doris was driven to the clinic by Joan, who immediately took charge.

Doris describes Joan as nurturing and someone who makes everyone feel good. She credits Joan with offering comfort and support, saying, “She took me under her wing and I’m so happy to have her in my life.”

Both widowed, they bonded over shared grief and often reminisce about their loved ones. Joan emphasizes the importance of having a friend to talk to about emotions and their friendship continues to be filled with laughter, love and mutual support.

Betty & Dave – Unexpected connections

After losing his wife, Dave moved to Berwick Parksville to ease his loneliness. By participating in card games and fitness classes, he quickly formed friendships with other residents.

“It’s like I’ve found another family,” he says.

Although romance was not something he was seeking, a friendly gesture from Betty changed everything. She recalls being immediately drawn to him and their friendship naturally grew. They now enjoy playing cards and curling together while maintaining their independence.

“We’re happy for each other as a couple and as individuals,” Betty shares.

Joe & Peter – All aboard for friendship

Joe, a member of the Romeo Club luncheon group, quickly connected with Peter, leading to the creation of the Railway Club.

“We may be in our 90s, but there are plenty of skilled people here,” Joe says.

Along with four other members, they built a fully functioning model railway, turning their shared interest into a meaningful project. Their collaboration strengthened their friendship and today, the club continues to brainstorm new ideas to work on together.

Bill and Joe became friends after Joe moved in and needed help finding his way around. Despite their age difference, they soon discovered shared experiences, including attending the same high school and visiting the same coffee shops—just a decade apart.

Now, they frequently play pool together and share meals, their bond strengthened by a shared sense of humour. Whether enjoying a friendly game or exchanging stories about Nanaimo, their friendship continues to grow.

Doug & Lindsay – Finding a friend

Doug and Lindsay met at a gathering for former Craig Bay residents.

Lindsay describes the Berwick Parksville community as welcoming, making it easy to form connections. Doug agrees, noting that the more people one meets, the happier one feels.
