Belt check nets pot, mushrooms

Routine traffic stop results in more than police bargained for

  • Aug. 29, 2013 7:00 a.m.

An RCMP Central Vancouver Island Traffic officer together with Oceanside RCMP’s Municipal Traffic officer worked together conducting a seat belt check at Alberni Highway and Bellevue Road.

Oceanside RCMP Corporal Jesse Foreman reported that while checking one of the vehicles the officers detected the smell of marijuana. The 28-year- old male driver from Port Alberni and his passenger, a 17-year- old female from Nanaimo were arrested.

A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed that the pair had two half pounds of marijuana and a quarter pound of dried hallucinogenic mushrooms.

The driver and occupant were released on promises to appear in Nanaimo Provincial Court at a later date.
