The Englishman River Water Service management board has awarded a $21 million contract to Nanaimo's Knappett Projects for the water intake, water treatment plant and Top Bridge reservoir transmission main.

The contract amount is $21,181,194 (plus GST). As well, the ERWS management board authorized staff to award the supply of membrane filtration equipment to H2O Innovation of Calgary for $3,720,298.

The City of Parksville said construction is expected to begin in four to six weeks with the first stage to involve excavation and trenching for underground utility construction located on city property in the industrial park. Completion of the project is anticipated to be during the summer of 2018, a timeline that complies with Island Health's operation conditions for the project.

Pre-qualifications for Contract 1 were advertised in August 2016 and following technical evaluation based on previous experience, resources, project management and relative project size and bonding capabilities, general contractors were selected to bid on ERWS contracts, according to the city. Request for tenders for the Springwood Reservoir transmission main (Contract 2) will be issued in February to pre-qualified contractors.

"Once this significant community project is complete, the community's water system will ensure high-quality, safe water which will exceed Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines and the project will be sized to handle water demands for future generations," said a release from the city.
