An employee of Duncan’s Walmart said he heard a “big crash” while working at the store on the afternoon of March 11.

When he investigated the loud noise, he discovered that a motorist had driven a car through a side door of the building, causing damage to the door area and a short distance inside the building.

“The door was demolished,” he said.

A release from the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP confirmed the accident and said police are investigating.

Police responded to a report at approximately 3:12 p.m. that a gray Nissan sport utility vehicle had driven into the business.

While the investigation is in its early stages, there are indications that are leading police to believe that the lone occupant of the vehicle suffered a medical emergency prior to the crash.

“There are no other injuries and substantial damage to the business is being assessed,” the release said.

“Several off-duty first responders were in the immediate area and provided immediate first aid to the driver.”
