The City of Parksville is preparing for its upcoming parcel tax review for 2021.

City council voted in favour, on March 15, to set the date for the parcel tax review panel hearing for Monday, April 19, at 5:45 p.m., which will be held in the forum of the Parksville Civic and Technology Centre.

Parcel taxes are when local governments taxes are levied on the unit, frontage or area of a property. They are distinct from property value taxes, which are levied on the assessed value of a property.

Council also voted to receive the report from the city’s manager of administrative services, Amanda Weeks, dated March 1.

In Weeks’s report, it read the panel hearing on April 19 will be to authenticate the 2021 parcel tax rolls for water, sewer and regional parks, as required by the city’s community charter.

According to the report, it stated for a complaint to be heard, it must be received by the city at least 48 hours prior to the meeting. A complaint can be made if it pertains to an error or omission respecting a name or address on the parcel tax roll, the inclusion of a parcel or if the taxable area or the taxable frontage of a parcel and if an exemption has been improperly allowed or disallowed.
