Connecting to jobs at hiring fair

Job-seekers encouraged to bring along their resumes to Parksville event

More than 30 employers and organizations looking to hire local people, or help connect them with employers, will be at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre on Thursday, May 2 noon until 4 p.m.

"The Hiring Fair is free to anyone interested in attending and it is a terrific way for job seekers to network with employers face to face," explained Lori Koop by e-mail. Koop is the operations manager for the Career Centre, which is hosting the event.

This fair is a chance to learn about current employment opportunities and what is coming up. Not specifically a "career" fair, it will provide a glimpse of the many different sectors out there.

"We are asking potential employees to 'dress the part' and bring updated resumes so that they are ready to go should an employer be interested in interviewing them right on the spot," Koop said.

"We also encourage them to perhaps print off and fill in a sample job application from a business, so that all of their pertinent information is close at hand if they need to fill in paperwork at the fair."

AGS Business Systems will have a photocopier on site in the event that people need to run off a resume or two to drop off that day.

Confirmed attendees include the area's major resorts and some grocery stores and restaurants, big companies like Catalyst Paper, Nurse Next Door and Sun Life Financial, institutions like Community Futures Alberni-Clayoquot, the Nanaimo Correctional Centre, RCMP and Vancouver Island Regional Library.
