A truck was found crashed and resting on its side this morning, with no one at the scene.
North Cedar Volunteer Fire Department and Nanaimo RCMP were called to Raines Road in Cedar at about 9:15 a.m. Friday. A GMC Sierra truck had crashed through a utility pole and ended up on its side on the banks of the Nanaimo River.
Percy Tipping, North Cedar Volunteer Fire Department chief, said at the scene firefighters were initially concerned the driver might have been thrown from the vehicle, but all the windows in the vehicle were intact and there appeared to be no signs of someone having been injured.
“So he climbed out,” Tipping said.
Witnesses reported to police the sole male occupant of the vehicle had been observed by himself earlier that morning in the vehicle, said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.
Police have contacted the rental company that owns the truck in an attempt to find out who might have been driving it at the time of the accident.
“Speed was probably a factor,” O’Brien said. “He left the vehicle for reason unkown and members will be dealing with it as per a civil matter to probably recoup any damage to the pole and everything else.”
