Regional District of Nanaimo Electoral Area F (Coombs, Hilliers, Errington, Whiskey Creek, Meadowood) wants a bike skills park constructed in the area.

Director Leanne Salter made a recommendation, suggested by the Electoral Area F Parks and Open Space Advisory Committee, to have a bike park built either behind the French Creek School Community Park in Coombs, which is the preferred location, or on another suitable location.

“It’s my understanding that there’s not a lot of work to put in this park because it’s dirt,” Salter told the Electoral Area Select Committee recently. “But I can’t say I’ve actually seen a bike skills park. Nevertheless it does sound like it’s a large project.”

The Regional District of Nanaimo board at the Dec. 6 regular meeting unanimously approved the recommendation.

Staff will review the proposal and it will include identifying various possible locations for the bike park. It will also include the costs and other details.

“It will go through that process,” said Tom Osborne, RDN general manager of recreation and parks. “Identifying a bike skills part in the Electoral Area F has been a priority project. Where it’s to be located, the magnitude of this project can vary everywhere between what they call a pump track to a large BMX track. They all vary in size and even the complexity of both the two have to be scaled in as part of that review.”

Electoral Area E (Nanoose Bay) director Bob Rogers fully supported the bike skills park recommendation as his community just recently installed a pump track near the Nanoose Bay Elementary School.

“It is used by the local school as part of their training area for the kids,” said Rogers.
