Driver fell asleep, leading to crash

No drugs or alcohol believed to have been involved in incident

When residents at Alberni Highway and Fairdown Road awoke early Friday morning and heard the smashing of metal and the screeching of brakes, they feared the worst.

However, said RCMP Corporal Jesse Foreman, while it was bad, the crash that sent a vehicle slamming into a ditch only resulted in minor injuries.

The crash, he said, took place at 4:30 a.m. when the male driver apparently fell asleep at the wheel.

“There were no drugs and alcohol involved,” Foreman said. “However, he took quite a tumble, 50 or 60 feet into the ditch. The neighbours woke up to screeching and smashing and they thought it was more serious than it was.”

No charges were laid in the crash, which completely destroyed the vehicle.
