Driver runs from crash site

Crosswalk smashup could have been a lot worse, say police

Police say a collision at a crosswalk in Parksville on the weekend could have proven extremely serious, as a pedestrian was poised to cross the street when the crash occurred.

Oceanside RCMP Corporal Richard van de Pol said the incident took place just after 5 p.m. Saturday when the driver of a white Infinity stopped at a controlled crosswalk at the intersection of Island Highway and Martindale Road.

“A white, Ford F-150 pickup approached from behind and didn’t slow down at all,” he said. “It crashed into the rear end of the vehicle stopped for the pedestrian.”

Nobody was hurt in the collision and the driver of the pickup, he added, fled the scene, although van de Pol said police were able to located him shortly thereafter.

“Police located a 50-year-old man from Nanoose Bay who displayed some signs of intoxication,” he said. “The matter remains under police investigation band the driver of the pickup could be facing charges for failing to remain at the scene of an accident.”
