A motorist crashed along Terminal Avenue yesterday, taking out a section of fence at the supportive housing complex there.
Nanaimo RCMP are investigating the single-vehicle collision, which occurred just before 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 15, at 250 Terminal Ave.
The car involved, an older-model Chevrolet, was a vehicle that officers had attempted to stop just minutes earlier in downtown Nanaimo for a minor traffic violation, according to an RCMP press release. The driver refused to stop, police say, and sped away. Given the speed involved, the time of day and the amount of vehicle and pedestrian foot traffic, the officer did not attempt to stop the vehicle.
Abut five minutes later, the same car was reported to have crashed into a fence and the driver was seen running from the scene.
A woman remained at the scene and she was later determined to be the registered owner of the vehicle involved. According to police, she was “less than forthcoming with officers” when asked who was driving the car.
An RCMP police dog was brought to the scene, but due to the volume of foot traffic in the immediate area, a track could not be established.
“Given the speeds involved and subsequent crash, it is fortunate that there were no reported injuries, “said reserve Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman.
