The Dashwood Volunteer Fire Department has reported that in the early hours of Friday, Dec. 23, someone attempted to break into their tents and set off fireworks on the property.
Fire chief Nick Acciavatti said nothing was stolen but they now will need to repair the damaged tent, that will serve as storage work space for the department next year while construction of their new fire hall is underway.
“They were looking for something to steal,” said Acciavatti. “But the tents are completely empty. We actually don’t have any equipment in there yet. That’s going to happen sometime early in 2023.”
The break-and-enter attempt captured by surveillance cameras at approximately 3:30 a.m. A white truck was videoed entering the property then lighting up fireworks, said Acciavatti. The cameras also captured suspects ripping the tents.
Acciavatti said it is a concern and they now have to make sure they have taken all the necessary measures to protect their property.

“It’s makes us uneasy, for sure,” said Acciavatti. “But it’s the sign of the times. We now have to make sure that we’ve secured everything. We will have cameras set up inside and outside the tents once we moved in. We’re looking at a security motion alarm system.”
The incident was reported to the Oceanside RCMP.
Acciavatti is asking the public to be vigilant for any suspicious activity in the area.
“If they notice anything, they should contact the RCMP directly,” he said. “They have a file started.”
