Residents of Electoral Area F will be getting a new community park at the Meadowood site in the Little Qualicum River area.

The Regional District of Nanaimo is purchasing 1830 Galvin Place from School District 69 (Qualicum) for the price of $150,000. The purchase was approved by the board at its Aug. 22 regular board meeting.

“This is a long-awaited and valuable addition to the Meadowood Community Park,” said Julian Fell, RDN Director for Area F. “We are grateful to the RDN and SD69 officials who have enabled this transition. It is now possible to make long-term plans for the Park to be developed into a centre for the Meadowood community.”

The acquired land has been managed by the RDN as a community park since 2014 through a Licence of Use agreement with School District 69. The 2.03-hectare property will be added to the adjacent Meadowood Community Park lands, which contain a recently developed adventure playground and sport court.

“We are pleased to have reached an agreement to sell this property to the RDN,” School District 69 Superintendent Rollie Koop said in a written release. “We are thrilled that the Meadowood site will remain a publicly held asset that will bring value to this community in future years.”

The land acquisition is funded from the Electoral Area F Community Parks budget. The purchase meets the RDN’s current Strategic Goals of increasing parks and open spaces, protecting the environment and securing recreation amenities as a core service.

Community engagement on development plans for the park, including potential design and construction of a community recreation centre on the site, will commence in 2018.
