Extra funding for area students at risk

Vulnerable students to get a financial helping hand

Vulnerable students in School District 69 (Qualicum) will benefit from $12,466 in new funding, a 3.5 per cent increase to the $348,742 already in place.

Secretary treasurer Bernice Hannam said the funds will be targeted to something specific through the CommunityLINK program, but they don’t have those details yet. CommunityLINK (learning includes nutrition and knowledge) provides funding  throughout the province for students at risk in terms of academic achievement and social development.

In SD69 they go to things like school meals, early reading programs and middle-school counseling, said Hannam. She admitted the addition is a drop in the bucket of their $44 million budget, but that all funds are appreciated and will be put to good use.

The new funds are part of a $11.2 million provincial supplement for vulnerable students for 2012-13.

“Our government is committed to providing quality education to students of all abilities and backgrounds,” said Parksville-Qualicum Beach MLA Ron Cantelon in a news release.
