There will be a farmers' market on the grounds of the Parksville Museum on Friday evenings this summer, starting July 11.
City council gave the go-ahead Monday to what they called a trial period for the operation, but not without some debate and a couple of dissenting voices.
Members of the Parksville and District Historical Society made a pitch — their second in the past month — to have the city change their lease to allow for the market. Society president Peter Kawerau told council they have met with neighbours like the chamber of commerce and Craig Bay residents and feel they have taken or will take measures to address concerns over traffic, parking and garbage.
"We are sensitive to all the concerns raised," Kawerau told council. "As for as we're concerned, the stage is set, the grounds are prepared and we are ready."
Kawerau said the society has commitments from 30 farmers, but the addition of artisans to the mix when there are others markets in the city featuring artisans had councillors Sue Powell and Marc Lefebvre concerned.
"I want to see it be a farmers' market, first and foremost," said Lefebvre. "I won't support it if there are artisans in there."
Said Mayor Chris Burger, in response: "I think of it as a trial, so I'm not all that concerned."
The motion to change the society's lease passed 5-2, with Powell and Lefebvre opposed.
