French Creek family woken up, rattled by attempted home invasion

Man wearing headlamp broke through locked side gate

A French Creek family is shaken up after a man reportedly attempted to break into their home earlier this month.

Jocelyn Cooper said she woke at approximately 4 a.m. to the sounds of someone knocking on the front door and ringing the doorbell. The family called 911 shortly before they realized the man, who was wearing a headlamp and appeared intoxicated, had broken through a locked side gate and entered the backyard.

“When I had gone to turn on the back patio light, he was already there with his hand on the back door handle. After yelling at him, he left,” Cooper said in an email to the PQB News.

Security camera footage revealed the man had made three attempts at getting in the front door before the noise woke them up, Cooper added.

Sgt. Shane Worth of the Oceanside RCMP confirmed police received a prowler complaint around that time, but the man was gone when officers arrived. Nothing was reported stolen and no other similar complaints were made in the area, according to Worth.

The incident has left the family rattled and not comfortable in their own home, Cooper said.
