It's still illegal to drive golf carts on Qualicum Beach roads

The provincial pilot program was cancelled, but it seems some people didn't get that message

The issue of golf carts on Qualicum Beach roads has "raised its ugly head again" said Coun. Bill Luchtmeijer.

Luchtmeijer said at a recent public safety committee meeting there were discussions about residents already using golf carts on roads.

"They (the residents) have taken the initiative to use golf carts on roadway. They are mistaken. That is not permitted yet," Luchtmeijer said. "You are in violation of the motor vehicle act and the RCMP will be waiting for you if you drive your golf cart on the streets of Qualicum Beach."

He said people seemed to think the pilot project, which is on hold, was a go-ahead.

In October 2016, Luchtmeijer told The NEWS that they weren't going to jump into the pilot project without doing all their homework.

At the same time, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure released a statement, saying they would be taking some time over the winter months to address concerns, such as speed limits, of golf carts on roads.
