Graduating high school students across the district and province are doing their Grad Transitions Exit Interviews and this year Kwalikum Secondary has made it even more of a community affair than usual.
The school has been doing the provincially required interviews at The Gardens in Qualicum Beach for about five year, explained KSS counsellor Shelly Slaughter.
This year, for the first time, they did group interviews with two grads being interviewed simultaneously by two adults and two Grade 10 and 11 students.
“Our interview teams consist of teachers, school district administration, the Qualicum Beach mayor, town councillors, church pastors, First Nations, Rotary members and students,” she said.
Each school does the process a bit differently, finding the best way to help students transition on to the next stage in their life.
Slaughter said they are taking the idea that “It takes a community to raise a child” to heart.
The grads were asked informal questions about what they learned, what they liked or didn’t like about school and where they might be headed.
The interview teams were free to follow the natural flow of conversation exploring anything from what their resumes are like to where they’d like to travel to tips for they younger students to make the most of their remaining high school years.
